Birth-Related Pelvic Floor/Perineal Trauma |
Birth-related trauma, including third and fourth-degree perineal tears, involves injury to the perineum and surrounding structures during vaginal childbirth. These injuries can result in pain, incontinence, and long-term complications if not adequately treated.
Management of severe perineal tears includes immediate surgical repair, often performed under anaesthesia. Postoperative care involves pain management, antibiotics to prevent infection, and stool softeners to ease bowel movements. Long-term recovery may include pelvic floor physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles and improve continence. Follow-up appointments, including specialized investigations, are essential to monitor healing and address ongoing symptoms. Supporting the emotional recovery from birth trauma is just as important as physical healing. We also provide mode of birth counselling and strategies for shared decision making for pregnant women related to aspects of pelvic floor/perineal protection.
