Pelvic Organ Prolapse |
Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when one or more of the pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus, or rectum, bulge into or out of the vagina due to weakened pelvic muscles and ligaments. This can result in a heavy dragging sensation in the pelvis, a lump in the vagina, urinary or bowel difficulties, and discomfort during intercourse.
Given the impact of prolapse on daily life and self-esteem, women need individualised management. Management options for pelvic organ prolapse range from conservative treatments like pelvic floor exercises and pessaries to surgical repairs aimed at restoring the normal position of the pelvic organs. The choice of treatment depends on the severity of the prolapse, symptoms, and patient preferences. For surgical management most of the times the body’s own tissues can be harvested. Very rarely there may be a need for a Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved synthetic mesh product which needs careful consideration and planning.
